Overseeding is a great way to thicken your lawn in Colorado and fill in any bare or patchy areas with new grass. However, it's not enough to just let the new grass seeds grow on their own. You need to follow a strict watering schedule after overseeding your lawn to ensure the grass seeds have the moisture they need to germinate and establish themselves in your soil. During the first two weeks after overseeding, you'll need to water your lawn 2 to 4 times per day to keep the soil moist. Then, during weeks 2 to 4 after overseeding, you'll want to switch your watering schedule to 1 to 2 times per day, adjusting to longer periods of watering during each session. After about a month, you can go back to watering your lawn normally. When done right, the new grass seeds will sprout and grow into beautiful green grass!
Follow a light and frequent watering schedule 1 to 2 weeks after overseeding.

The first two weeks after overseeding your lawn are critical because this is the time when the seeds will start to germinate. During this time, your goal is to make sure that the soil stays moist so that the seeds have the water they need to germinate. To do this, you should water your lawn 2 to 4 times per day, 1 to 2 weeks after overseeding, but each watering session should be short.
Following this watering schedule during the early days after overseeding will provide the grass seeds with the moisture they need to develop. If the soil dries out, even for a few hours, the grass seeds can easily dry out. This will halt the germination or stop it entirely. A frequent and shallow watering for the first 2 weeks maintains surface-level moisture to jumpstart the growth of the grass seeds.
Adjust to Infrequent & Deep Watering for Weeks 2 to 4 After Overseeding
Two weeks after overseeding your lawn, you can cut back on the frequency of your watering, but you'll want to increase the amount of water you give your lawn during each session. During weeks 2 to 4, your watering schedule should shift to an infrequent but deep watering approach. To do this, you'll want to water your lawn 1 to 2 times per day, but for longer periods of time. This watering schedule will allow the water to reach deeper into the soil, encouraging the roots of your new grass to grow deeper as well. Building a deeper root system makes your lawn more resilient in the long run.
You can go back to watering your lawn normally a month after overseeding.
Once you've reached the 4-week mark after overseeding your lawn, you can go back to watering your lawn normally. At this point, the seeds should have germinated, and the new grass should be established enough to survive on its own. However, you'll still want to make sure that your lawn receives enough water to stay hydrated, so you'll need to continue watering it regularly. Depending on your area, your lawn should receive about 1.5 inches of water per week to stay hydrated and keep growing healthy.
